Stop Chasing Clicks & Chase Customers Instead

The future of SEO is looking more and more like it's distant past.

This article/video is part of a longer series outlining how modern marketing happens with Go-to-Market AI. It (generally) outlines the following eBook, that you’re welcome to for free: Pipes Before the Chocolate.

For far too long, we’ve been obsessed with numbers that look good on a dashboard but mean almost nothing to a real customer. Page views, clicks, rankings—they’re flashy, easy to measure, and completely miss the point. Traditional SEO treats people like traffic. The bigger the number, the better the result.

But if no one actually cares about what they’re clicking into, what’s the point?

Over the past 10 years or so, the goal of the SEO-game was was to beat the system: write for the algorithm, sprinkle in the keywords, and rack up the clicks. But the content it produced was shallow at best. It didn’t guide, inspire, or help.

It’s “human slop” at its finest.

And the truth is, today’s audiences are smarter. They're tired of fluff. Tricks like keyword stuffing or pop-up overload might snag a few leads, but they won't build trust. And without trust, you're not building anything worth keeping.

Four Shifts That Define Customer-Centric SEO

1. From Clicks to Journeys

Stop chasing traffic for traffic’s sake. Start asking a better question: Where is the customer in their journey, and how can this content help them move forward?

Metrics like bounce rates and time-on-page used to be the holy grail. But they don't tell the whole story. The real win is creating content that answers actual questions, solves real problems, and builds momentum.

Instead of obsessing over total traffic, I try to focus on what people did after landing on a page. Did they sign up for the newsletter? Download a resource? That’s what mattered. Those were the signals of real engagement.

2. Make It Real: Authentic, Purpose-Driven Content

Forget keyword density. Forget writing for robots. If your content doesn’t sound like it came from a human who gives a damn, it’s not going to stick.

Authenticity cuts through the noise. Content that’s crafted to educate and empower will always beat content that’s just checking boxes. Whether I was building at Copy.ai or navigating the chaos of early startup life, one thing was constant: people respond to clarity, honesty, and utility.

Ask yourself: Is this helping someone? Is this demystifying a complex idea? Is this something I’d actually want to read? If the answer’s no, go back and make it better.

3. Use AI and Automation Without Losing Your Voice

Yes, AI is powerful. Yes, automation can save you time. But let’s be clear—it should never replace the human touch. AI can suggest what to write. It can’t decide why it matters. That’s your job.

In other words, use the tools, but don’t let them use you.

4. Toss the Old Playbook and Write a New One

The old rules? Forget them. Keyword stuffing, clickbait headlines, content mills—they belong to a different era.

What works today is content built for humans first.

And when I say rewrite the playbook, I mean all of it. From how you brainstorm topics to how you measure success. Center your strategy around intent. Around journey. Around value. Every word you write should reflect a commitment to helping someone do something better, faster, or smarter.

Even if no one finds your content via Google, your sales team, customer success team, product team, etc. can use this in interactions with prospects. And this is how you future-proof your SEO. Not with gimmicks. With genuine, useful, human-first content.

Turning Principles Into Practice: What Marketers Can Do Right Now

It’s time to get practical. Here’s how you start making the shift toward a more customer-centric SEO strategy:

  • Reimagine Your Metrics: Ditch vanity stats. Instead, track signs of real engagement—like newsletter signups, downloads, or meaningful interactions. Those are your new KPIs.

  • Use AI, But Add Soul: Platforms like Copy.ai can boost your output, but never skip the human edit. Make it conversational. Make it real.

  • Lead With Education: Every piece of content should teach, clarify, or inspire. If it doesn’t, it’s just filler. Cut it or fix it.

  • Be Personal, Be Real: Share your stories. Show your work. Talk like a person. That’s how you earn trust and build loyalty.

  • Experiment Relentlessly: Try new formats. Test new tools. Your strategy needs to be dynamic.

One Last Thing: Connection.

SEO isn’t dead. It’s just evolving. The future belongs to creators who care more about impact than impressions. More about resonance than reach.

So ask yourself: Are you still chasing empty metrics, or are you building something that actually matters? The answer will shape everything from the content you create to the relationships you build.
